Before you go to the Ombudsman

  1. Write to your insurer first. Use its grievance officer, by email or letter, and keep a copy. IRDAI gives insurers 14 days to resolve a complaint.
  2. You can go to the Ombudsman if the insurer rejects it, doesn't reply within one month, or replies and you're not satisfied.
  3. File within one year of the insurer's reply, or within one year after that one month runs out if it never replied.
  4. Don't go to court on the same matter at the same time. The Ombudsman can't hear a case that's already in a court or consumer commission.
